Edward Singleton Recognized for Efforts to Increase African American Professionals in Substance Abuse Field

Edward Singleton, Ph.D., senior clinical associate at The MayaTech Corporation, received the National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Substance Abuse Consortium (NHBCUSAC) Award today in recognition of his outstanding and exemplary contributions to the organization. Terry Cline, Ph.D., administrator for the Federal government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), presented the award to Dr. Singleton at the Ninth Annual Dr. Lonnie E. Mitchell National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Substance Abuse and Mental Health Conference in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Singleton is a founding member of NHBCUSAC, which was established in 1993 primarily to increase the number of African American and other minority professionals in the field of substance abuse. The organization, headquartered at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., is a conglomerate of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) located throughout the United States that have, or are developing, substance abuse curricula and/or research programs.

"I'm humbled by the recognition," said Dr. Singleton. "I'm just grateful to have been able to fulfill my purpose in contributing to the critical need to grow research and scholarship opportunities that will produce more African Americans and other minority professionals working to prevent and treat substance abuse."

The award was presented to Dr. Singleton to honor his vigilance in working to overcome administrative barriers to building research capacity at HBCUs by first introducing the field of substance abuse and raising the level of awareness to students and faculty.

"Ed has fought virtually his entire career to address substance abuse in those areas where the impact will be the greatest," said Kimberly Jeffries Leonard, Ph.D., technical vice president and director of MayaTech's Center for Technical Assistance, Training, and Research Support. " His vision was to build a cadre of high quality racial and ethnic minority substance abuse professionals and researchers, and when you see the work of the NHBCUSAC , it is clear that Ed's vision has been realized."

After serving as the director of the Substance Abuse Research Group at MayaTech in the 1990s, Dr. Singleton rejoined the company last year as a senior clinical associate, where he lends his expertise to the Center for Community Prevention and Treatment Research and works closely on the Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral, and Treatment project.

His career as a behavioral scientist and practitioner spans 30 years of directing programs; conducting research, policy analysis, and program evaluation; and providing technical assistance and training in addiction, mental health, and criminal and juvenile justice. His background also consists of research capacity building, infrastructure development, and career training.

Dr. Singleton's educational credentials include a B.S. in psychology from the University of Maryland University College, an M.A. in psychology from Loyola College in Maryland, and a Ph.D. in psychology from Howard University. Respected as a national expert in substance abuse, his accomplishments include being honored with the NHBCUSAC President's Award, the Citation for Outstanding Public Service from the Mayor of Baltimore, and the Lonnie E. Mitchell Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Research, Prevention, and Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Addiction. In addition to NHBCUSAC, he is a founding member and co-chair of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, Special Populations Committee.
