MayaTech To Perform Legal Review of HIV Services for CDC
The MayaTech Corporation has been awarded a contract to conduct a legal review and assessment of State laws, regulations, administrative rules, and policies concerning HIV partner counseling and referral services for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHSTP).
HIV partner counseling and referral services are considered an effective, but underutilized, method for preventing the spread of HIV infections. MayaTech will help advance the field by performing a review and analysis of State and selected local laws related to HIV partner counseling and referral services and preparing a comprehensive report of the current legal environment for these services. MayaTech's work will assist NCHSTP in its review of the CDC's guidelines for HIV partner counseling and referral services.
The project will be performed by MayaTech's Center for Health Policy and Legislative Analysis, which focuses on researching and analyzing state public health laws for public policy and evaluation purposes. Recent awards to the Center include legal research and analysis for the CDC's State Tobacco Activities Tracking and Evaluation (STATE) System, and examination of State school-based nutrition policies for the National Cancer Institute. The Center is also teaming with Andrews University to study State methamphetamine precursor chemical restrictions for the National Institute of Justice.
"We are excited about the opportunity to extend our HIV-related legal research. This is an area of critical public health importance. We will draw upon the legal research expertise offered by our Center to clarify some of the key policy issues applicable to HIV prevention," says Jamie Chriqui, Ph.D., director of MayaTech's Center for Health Policy and Legislative Analysis.
MayaTech offers the CDC the combination of nearly two decades of experience in HIV/AIDS prevention, research, technical assistance, and evaluation along with more than 14 years of State and local legal research and analysis experience focusing on public health issues.
Jean O'Connor, J.D., M.P.H., MayaTech's deputy manager of the Center for Health Policy and Legislative Analysis, will serve as the project's director. O'Connor has extensive experience in public health law and policy development for the CDC, State agencies, and non-profit organizations.
