Renowned Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS Expert Receives The
MayaTech Corporation Public Health Leadership Award
Beny J. Primm, M.D., was presented with The
MayaTech Corporation Public Health Leadership Award to recognize a public health professional,
lay person, organization, or government agency that has exhibited
a sustained commitment to the elimination of preventable death
and disease for the community at large. Dr Primm, a world-renowned
authority on HIV, drug addiction, and AIDS, is the first to hold
this distinction.

MayaTech Continues Management of State Cancer Policy Database
The MayaTech Corporation, a leading provider of consulting
and technical services to Federal agencies, has been re-awarded
the National Cancer Institute contract to manage and provide
enhancement to its State Cancer Policy Database, www.scld-nci.net.
For over 15 years, MayaTech has been instrumental in the design,
development, and maintenance of the database and has worked to
optimize its utility as a tool for cancer prevention and control
policy research.
MayaTech Launches New Service Center
The MayaTech Corporation expanded its services with a new center
that will help Federal agencies comply with the recent Executive
Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directive to develop
plans for Microsoft Windows XP™ and Vista™ security
configurations. MayaTech's newest offering, the OMB Common
Security Configurations (OMB/CSC) Service Center, is accessible
at www.ombcsc.net.
MayaTech Wins IDIQ Contract
The MayaTech Corporation will design, develop, and deliver training
and technical assistance services to the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Administration (SAMHSA) under an Indefinite Delivery
Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with an estimated value
of $100 million over the next five years. The MayaTech Corporation
will lead a team of eight subcontractors and one national
mental health organization that will implement and assess
program development and operations support to address treatment
and prevention needs of individuals and families with substance
abuse and mental health challenges. MayaTech was selected
as an awardee in light of its position as the training and
technical assistance provider responding to critical and
time-sensitive requests by SAMHSA over the past eight years.
Edward Singleton, Ph.D., Honored by NHBCU Consortium
Edward Singleton, Ph.D., senior clinical associate at The MayaTech
Corporation, received the National Historically Black Colleges
and Universities Substance Abuse Consortium (NHBCUSAC) Award
in recognition of his outstanding and exemplary contributions
to the organization. Terry Cline, Ph.D., administrator for
the Federal government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration, presented the award to Dr. Singleton
at the Ninth Annual Dr. Lonnie E. Mitchell National Historically
Black Colleges and Universities Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Conference in Washington, D.C.
MayaTech Study Identifies Access to Health Care Disparities
The MayaTech Corporation presented findings that show significant
disparities in the level of care placement and the factors
associated with deciding the level of care between African
American and Caucasian youth with substance use disorders.
These findings were presented at the 20th Annual Research
Conference, "A System of Care for Children's Mental
Health: Expanding the Research Base," held in Tampa,
Florida. MayaTech's research was conducted as part of a
project funded by SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment
(CSAT) to assess the patterns of and potential reasons for
ethnic and racial disparities in substance abuse treatment
among adolescents in the United States. The data used for
this study were collected from 12- to 17-year-old African
American and Caucasian youths from CSAT-funded substance
abuse treatment programs.
MayaTech Examines Medicaid's Impact on Access to Care by
African Americans
The MayaTech Corporation, in partnership with Andrews University,
was awarded a 30-month grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's
Substance Abuse Policy Research Program to evaluate factors potentially
affecting African Americans' access to outpatient substance abuse
treatment. The purpose of the project is to examine whether state
Medicaid policies governing outpatient substance abuse treatment
coverage help or hinder access to treatment services by African
Americans. Duane McBride, Ph.D., director of Andrews University's
Institute for the Prevention of Addiction, will serve as the
project's Principal Investigator, and Jamie Chriqui, Ph.D., Senior
Technical Vice-President for Research and Evaluation, will serve
as the Co-principal Investigator.
Kimberly Jefferies Leonard, Ph.D., Presents Findings on
Substance Abuse Treatment Disparities
Kimberly Jeffries Leonard, Ph.D., of The MayaTech Corporation
presented preliminary findings on African American adolescents
in substance abuse treatment at the "Substance Abuse, Criminal
Justice, and HIV in African Americans: Research Development Workshop." The
workshop, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse's
Special Populations Office and the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), was held in Silver Spring,
Maryland. Dr. Leonard serves as the lead researcher on a project
funded by SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)
to assess potential reasons for ethnic and racial disparities
in substance abuse treatment among adolescents in the United
States.
